Cordova, AK – The Eyak Corporation, the Native Village of Eyak, and the Cordova Community Medical Center are partnering together to provide much-needed financial relief to the Cordova community as it faces the health and economic challenges posed by COVID-19.
The Native Village of Eyak’s Ilanka Community Health Center and the Cordova Community Medical Center have identified equipment and other critical needs to be purchased with funds donated by The Eyak Corporation, Cordova’s Alaska Native village corporation.
The Eyak Corporation Board of Directors voted unanimously in a special telephonic meeting held last night to authorize up to $200,000 in financial assistance to help alleviate the health and economic challenges posed by COVID-19.
“We’re fortunate to be able to give back and help our local clinics get the supplies and equipment they need right now,” said Martin Parsons, Chairman of The Eyak Corporation Board of Directors. “Though Cordova has yet to see a case of COVID-19, our community is vulnerable, and TEC wants to do our part to ensure we can be prepared.”
Like many other coastal communities, Cordova relies heavily on outside workers during the summer fishing season, and its economy is largely dependent on commercial fishing activity.
“Cordova is in for a challenging year, and our organizations wanted to combine our efforts. By working together, we can be ready for every scenario,” said Bertrand Adams, Executive Director of the Native Village of Eyak.
Greg Meyer, Chair of the Cordova Community Medical Center Authority Board of Directors added, "We are immensely grateful for this gift, and it couldn’t be more timely. Thank you from all of us at CCMC and Cordova.”
“In rural communities, we all pull together and support each other. As a small business owner and one of The Eyak Corporation’s Shareholders, I’m thankful to see this cooperative effort and I’m proud of my village corporation,” said Sylvia Lange, community leader and owner of The Reluctant Fisherman.
